Zagreb is for vintage enthusiasts

Zagreb should be on your list if ...

Yearning for the days of our childhood can be a pretty intense emotion. It has a magical ability to whisk us away to a time when life was all about innocence, wonder, and endless curiosity. And right there in the heart of Croatia lies a city that's like a treasure chest of memories.  So I ask you: sure, you’ve heard or even been to the Croatian coast (stunning, by the way) ….  but have you visited Zagreb?

The capital and cultural hub of Croatia, Zagreb is a place where childhood nostalgia blooms like a vibrant flower. With its picturesque streets, historic landmarks, and enchanting parks, Zagreb invites you to indulge in a delightful journey down memory lane.

What is nostalgia? I’d say the best definition award would go to Milan Kundera who wrote: “The Greek word for return is nostos. Algos means suffering. So nostalgia is the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return.

Mic drop.

Speaking from my own experience as a Croatian who left the country nearly two decades ago, I often find myself feeling nostalgic when I'm in Zagreb. But here's the thing: you don't have to be Croatian to understand that sentiment. Nostalgia is something we all can relate to at some point in our lives. It's that longing for days gone by when everything seemed easier, those memories that seem like they're from a different era, like an old sepia-toned photograph. And from its enchanting parks and vibrant markets to fascinating museums and delightful street art, Zagreb offers plenty of experiences that can make you feel exactly like that.

So let’s explore the places to see and things to do in Zagreb that evoke a sense of nostalgia and take us back to the cherished days of ‘way back when’.

Start your Zagreb adventure at the heart of the city, Ban Jelačić Square. This bustling square is the city's central hub, surrounded by cafes, shops, and historic buildings. It is the perfect place to kick off your exploration and feel the pulse of the city. Take a tram ride around the square, grab an ice cream, and watch as locals go about their daily lives.

Continue on to the Zagreb Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which stands as a majestic and historic symbol of faith. This awe-inspiring Gothic masterpiece, with its twin spires, was initially constructed in the 13th century and has undergone numerous renovations and restorations over the centuries. It also holds the distinction of being the tallest building in Croatia, offering visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of the city from its tower.

Stroll through Dolac Market, where vibrant stalls offer fresh produce, flowers, and handmade crafts. It's a sensory experience that can ignite your inner child's fascination with colors, textures, and flavors. Exploring the market, one can rediscover the joy of colorful human interactions and relish the taste of fresh local produce.

The Zagreb funicular, or Zagrebačka uspinjača in Croatian, is one of the city's most iconic and beloved landmarks. This historic funicular railway has been in operation since 1890, making it one of the oldest in the world. With a short but steep route that connects the Lower Town (Donji Grad) to the Upper Town (Gornji Grad), it offers both locals and tourists a convenient and scenic way to traverse the city's hilly terrain.

Venturing further, the streets of Upper Town offer a nostalgic glimpse into Zagreb's past. Cobblestone alleys wind through vibrant pastel-colored buildings, leading to iconic landmarks such as St. Mark's Church and the Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata). Each step taken offers opportunities for running through narrow streets, playing hide-and-seek among the ancient walls, and marveling at the captivating stories etched into the city's architecture.

Ascend the Lotrščak Tower, where the daily firing of the cannon at noon is a tradition dating back to the 19th century. Then, descend into the Grič Tunnel, an underground passage filled with history and intrigue. It's like stepping into a secret world, perfect for igniting your sense of adventure.

From charming parks to quirky museums, and from colorful street art to delicious markets, Zagreb offers a multitude of experiences that will awaken your sense of wonder, curiosity, and joy. So, pack your bags and embark on a journey to Zagreb, where cobblestone streets and historic architecture will transport you to a bygone era, filling your heart with a sense of nostalgia for a time you've never known, but also for many moments of your own life which are now in the past.
