Milan is for beauty lovers

Say ‘Ciao’ to Milan if:

  • Anne Frank said, “Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.” She had a point there.

  • Milan can lift your spirits, guaranteed. Whether you're savoring a mouthwatering risotto at a quaint trattoria, strolling through the stunning Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, or simply sipping espresso at a charming café, Milan's charm and allure can't help but elevate your mood.

  • Admire the masterpieces at the Pinacoteca di Brera, immerse yourself in the city's diverse neighborhoods, or indulge in a night of Italian opera at La Scala …. Milan offers an array of experiences that captivate your senses and steer your focus outward.

If upon hearing the word “Milan”, all you can think of is Fashion Week, attenzione. I dare you to visit the capital of Lombardy and quietly admit to yourself that you have been living in ignorance. Take it from someone who follows many of Vogue’s gazillion Instagram handles: reducing Milan to fashion is simply not fair.

In my case, Milan was an escape. The trip happened in a very turbulent period of my life, full of sadness and profoundly shocking events. I tried to cancel it because honestly, I wasn’t looking forward to getting out of bed, let alone travelling to a different country. But it was impossible to get a refund, and I almost barked at myself: “So you want to lose money, on top of everything?” That was the enthusiasm at the beginning of my journey.

Plot twist: Five days later, I returned from Milan a more serene and balanced person. Despite sorrow and confusion, I let this charming city alleviate my sadness and bring about newfound inspiration. And before you imply that shopping may have helped me get there: sorry to disappoint you, but no. A nice blazer or a new pair of ankle boots from the Fashion District did not lift my spirits.

(Now that I mention it, I do realize I need both).

Milan, known worldwide as a fashion and design capital, offers many wonders that can uplift and inspire even the weariest of souls. With its art, culture, culinary delights, and peaceful retreats, it serves as a haven for those seeking solace and healing. By immersing yourself in the city's vibrant energy and partaking in its offerings, you can definitely find a respite from sadness.

Start with the obvious. Milan’s opulent architecture, such as the breathtaking Gothic Duomo di Milano, will leave you in awe, providing a sense of grandeur that transcends any personal struggles. Gazing up at the spires and intricate sculptures, you can’t help but feel a connection to something greater than yourself.  As you stand before this architectural masterpiece, the grandeur and history embodied in its stones can inspire feelings of wonder and hope. Try visiting the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie to witness Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, "The Last Supper." I say “try” because you will have to book it well in advance. If you are traveling to Milan  spontaneously, perhaps you will have to postpone the visit for another time. “The Last Supper” is an iconic mural painting which holds profound emotional depth and symbolism, allowing you to contemplate themes of faith, sacrifice, and the impermanence of life.

Also, pay a visit to Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio. This magnificent basilica is dedicated to Milan's patron saint, Saint Ambrose. The solemn atmosphere, adorned with beautiful mosaics and ancient relics, invites introspection and spiritual contemplation. Please also don’t miss the nearby Library.

Continue up North to Pinacoteca di Brera, a renowned art gallery is home to a remarkable collection of Italian Renaissance masterpieces. If you’re an art enthusiast, roam through the gallery halls, admiring works by artists such as Raphael, Caravaggio, and Bellini. The Pinacoteca will evoke a sense of awe and serenity, offering a refuge from your worldly concerns.

After enjoying all the art, wander through the grounds of the historic Sforza Castle and immerse yourself in Parco Sempione, the adjoining park. The expansive green spaces, elegant fountains, and peaceful corners provide an opportunity for quiet reflection, leisurely walks, and moments of solitude amidst the city's vibrancy.

For those yearning for tranquility amidst the bustling cityscape, the Navigli district is the place to go. Experience the magical ambiance of the Navigli canals at sunset. Take in the beauty of the surroundings while enjoying a leisurely boat ride, sipping a glass of wine in a waterfront café, or simply observing the reflections dancing on the water's surface.

To conclude, seeking comfort is a personal journey, and it's essential to listen to your own intuition and emotions. Allow yourself the freedom to explore the city at your own pace, taking breaks when needed, and embracing the experiences that resonate with you. Exposure to beauty can be a solace in itself.
